While much has changed since HBF’s beginnings as the Metropolitan Hospital Benefit Fund in 1941, there is one constant - a focus on providing quality health insurance to our members. Our not-for-profit status sets us apart from most major health insurers and means we exist to help members, not to drive profits for shareholders. In 2017, HBF paid out over $1.5 billion in health claims to our one million members - over $4.3 million each working day. As the largest health fund in Western Australia, HBF has a strong presence in the community. Throughout the year, the HBF Fitness sessions, staged throughout Perth and in three regional areas encourage West Australians to be more physically active. And since 2010, tens of thousands of runners, walkers, wheelchairs and prams have come together to help themselves and raise funds for the community at the annual HBF Run for a Reason. In 2017, 36,224 people participated in the biggest event to date and brought the total fundraising for WA health charities to nearly $8 million in 8 years. While helping our members get and stay healthy is important, our strongest contribution is the certainty HBF provides to its members; that when they need us, we will be there for them.
